Planetary sciences I  

Course Contents Planetary science is a major interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astrophysics with geology, geophysics, meteorology, atmospheric and space science. This close relationship to geophysics, atmospheric and space sciences implies that the study of the planety bodies in our Solar System and beyond offers the unique opportunity for comparison available to Earth scientists. This course teaches the concepts in the planetary physical sciences and solar system properties. The learning process is greatly enhanced by involving students in solving related problems. Study Goals After the course the student should be able to: 1. Describe the primary physical processes in solar and planetary systems and the properties involved 2. Apply modelling techniques that are commonly used to describe the primary physical processes in solar and planetary systems 3. Demonstrate the use of physical principles to derive knowledge on the state and evolution of (extra-)solar system bodies from observations 4. Assess the quality of evidence of current knowledge of (extra-)solar system bodies 5. Assess the habitability of a (extra-)solar system body based on inferences of its properties and orbit
